Another blogger and teacher, Babbling Abby is hosting teacher week on her blog. I know there are quite a few other teachers out there that read. Those of you that are not, I hope I don't bore you. Maybe you can learn a little more about me.
Today is 10 things about me as a teacher. Here goes...
1. First and foremost, I LOVE my job. Like, seriously, L-O-V-E it! I know very few people say that about their profession and I feel sorry for those people that are doing something that doesn't make them happy.
2. I teach preschool. The way my classroom is funded by the state, I can have both 3 and 4 year olds in my class. When I first started, the idea of having 3 year olds freaked me out. Now, it doesn't even phase me.
3. Some teachers say they always knew they wanted to be a teacher. Not me. I'm not sure that I had one exact plan. I went through several things I could be before I landed on teacher. I firmly believe teachers are born, not made. I was born to be a teacher even if I didn't know when I was younger.
4. This will be my fourth school year. I subbed in various school for a year after graduation before getting my first job. My first year, I taught Kindergarten. This will be my third year in Preschool.
5. My classroom is most always very energetic and LOUD. I believe that noise does NOT always equal chaos. Lots of learning takes place throughout the noise and constant movement.
6. One of my favorite things about teaching Preschool is how much they grow, change, and mature just in the course of the school year. We always take a picture of them at the beginning of the year and again at the end. I love to compare the two. This year I'm going to weigh and measure them both at the beginning and end of the year. I know they grow several inches at least.
7. I am always amazed at how much such a young child can learn and retain. I never push them since Preschool is not mandatory but I definitely encourage them to see how much they can do. I work very hard to make sure my children are more than ready for Kindergarten.
8. I get really attached to my kids. This is sometimes hard when they move up because I worry that another teacher doesn't love them as much as I do. If you've read my blog for a while, you know I'm always posting things on here about my class. I could talk about them for hours.
9. I have the funniest stories to tell. Preschoolers are hysterical little people. The stories they tell always crack me up. If you haven't had the pleasure to hang out with a 4 year old, you're missing out.
10. Ok, I have to say this. Although I clearly love my job and I obviously didn't get into this career for the money, the pay is terrible. I know I have the best schedule ever and I get lots of breaks, but come on! Teachers have a very serious job to do and I firmly believe we should be compensated for it.
On another note completely, I just have to say real quick, today is our one month anniversary. I cannot believe it's been a month already since the wedding. Also, today is our Boston Terrier Josie's 5th birthday!

As a fellow teacher (middle school) I agree that we deserve to be paid way more than we are!
Happy 1 month anniversary! My first year of marriage flew by and I bet yours will too!
First, happy 1 month anniversary! Time flies!!
I don't know how you teach preschoolers. Bless your heart!
Happy One Month Anniversary! I feel you about the preschoolers. They are so much fun! I just love them oh so much!
I totally agree with number 10! Can't wait to hear stories from your precious preschoolers!
I'm and SLP and I worked for early childhood! They are the cutest and a handle at the same time!! And they say some funny things!!
Loved your list!! Happy back to school!
So glad we get to work together! You are right, they just grow up way too fast during the year. That is smart to measure them this time to see growth. Happy 1st month anniversary! :)
Congrats on your 1 month anni!
Yay for Teacher Week! Loved reading your "Teacher Facts"! :)
I just had a 2nd interview today for a preschool teacher position - I always said I wanted to work with kids but didn't want to be a teacher, but I think preschool is the exception. Those kids are so darn cute and funny, and it's incredible how much they learn and grow! I've worked with infants in the past which is just as amazing - They change SO much over the course of a year. I totally agree teachers should be paid more. We're influencing the future of America on a daily basis. Frustrating.
Congrats on one month! Thursday is our 2 month anniversary and I can hardly believe it!
Girl, I just have to say, your job has got to be the hardest and most rewarding all rolled into one!!! Thank you so much for what you do!!!!!
I agree with the blogger above! Teaching is the hardest and most rewarding job! I know that your kids love you! You always have such a fun and positive outlook!
Well put! Teaching is hard but most rewarding and yes, I think with everything we do and put up with, we need a raise. I don't think it's fair that someone can throw a football and make millions but then teachers who are in charge of molding and shaping our future only get a certain amount. Oh well, we obviously don't do it for the money :)
Love your list Melissa, I hope the transition back to school is an easy one for you!! I bet you are a great and fun teacher!
